Docking Weddings

A marriage made in Docking

Docking Heritage Group would like to expand its collection of wedding photographs.

They are of great interest to family history researchers as they’re often the only time a family group is captured all together. These pictures can then be of help when trying to establish family connections.

They are also of interest to historians, giving a snapshot of customs and fashions of the time.

The photographs on this page represent a small selection from our archive. We are of course keen to add more pictures to these. If you have any photographs of your own or a relation’s wedding that you would allow us to add to our collection, please let us know.

The oldest dated photograph we have so far, is the one shown above from 1898.

Wedding of Harry Bray and Nancy Medler. Jan 6th 1951

It’s also nice to have a story behind each photograph. This picture is of Harry Bray and Nancy Medler. They were married at St Mary’s Church Docking on January 6th 1951 at 3pm with the reception being held in the Oddfellows hall, also in Docking. They then went to live at 10 Carr Terrace, Docking.

Harry worked as a farm labourer at Grove Farm Docking and Nancy worked as a housekeeper at Sunderland House Docking.

Although they left the village in 1953 they always considered Docking to be their home.

Docking’s double wedding

On 9th December 1950 at St. Mary’s Church, Docking, an unusual double wedding took place. Miss Diana Steward Newby was married to Mr. John H. Woodhouse, of Sandringham, and Miss Marie Steward Newby was married to Mr. Ronald F. Tilson, of Dersingham.

The brides were the only daughters of Mr. and Mrs. John Steward Newby of Docking. John Steward Newby was the landlord of the Railway Inn.

The officiating clergy were the Rev. H. D. Anderson and the Rev. F. A Gillion.

The bridesmaids were Miss Joy Skoyles with Miss Betty Rope, and Miss Isobel Card with Miss Margaret Todd. The brides were dressed in white figured brocade and the bridesmaids in gold taffeta. Mr. Alan Dunsdon and Mr. Walter Tilson each acted as best man.

John and Diana were married for 56 years (Diana died in 2007) and Roland and Marie were married just three months short of 60 years (Roland died in 2010).

Below you can see Diana, John and Marie Steward Newby, and the wedding group of Betty Rope, Alan Dunsdon, John Woodhouse, Diana Woodhouse, Joy Skoyles, Isabel Card, Ronald Tilson, Marie Tilson, Walter Tilson and Margaret Todd.
